"1998 Baja 1000"
Video Review

General Overview

"I've been Truing to win this thing for 25 years"
............Ivan Stewart...........

The 98 Baja 1000 was lauded as one of the finest races the peninsula had ever seen, and rightly so. The problem is that aside from the racers, the srews, and the residents along the route, few people actually got the chance to see much of it. Such is life in a point to point Baja race.

Now thanks to Dave Dash and the great folks at Shoemaker Productions, producers of "SCORE News" on the cable channel Speedvision, you can pull up a chair, grab a brewski, and take home the glory that was the 98 Baja 1000 on video.

And better yet, this is just one of the many available from Dave Dash and co. Shoemaker has the entire SCORE News series, along with events such as the BITD "Vegas to Reno", and the 98 Terrible Town 250. Over the next months, Off-Road.com will be bringing you reviews of Shoemaker's latest titles, but for now....

Baja!

Ivan Stewart & the SCORE News crew of Charlie Englebart & Jeorge Jerien take the viewer along on a high speed ride through some of the most rugged racing terrain on the planet, alternating between in-car footage, ground cameras, and of course low altitude, WFO helicopter footage. Begining in the little winery town of Santo Thomas, and ending in LaPaz, the 98 1000 covered over 1050 miles full of rocks, mountains, sandy beaches, cow paths and even paved roads. It's safe to say that there's nothing like it anywhere else in the world.

Highlights

  • All the top drivers including Ivan, Troy, Tim & Ed Herbst, Dan Smith / Dave Ashley * Larry Roseler & Curt Leduc (just to name a few)
  • Learn what it takes run an event like the Baja 1000 from the people who do it
  • In car footage from Gus Vildosola's Class 1, Ivan Stewart's Toyota Trophy Truck, Troy Herbst's "Truggy", and Ed Herbst' Trophy Truck
  • Vildosola's in car crash footage
  • Sweeping panoramic views courtesy of the Shoemaker Heliocopter
  • Wide open highway runs, mad dashes along the Pacific, rocks, rocks and more rocks!
  • Late night in the pits, with mad thrashing to get vehicles repaired and back on course
  • Interviews with off-road racing luminaries Ivan Stewart & "Lightning" Larry Ragland
  • Bekki Freeman, First woman to ever win a SCORE championship!
  • A tour of the Percision Preperation Inc. shop, and Indy car / Trophy Truck parts comparisons compliments of PPI's Tom Morris.

The Verdict - 5

Wether you are a long time race fan, racer yourself, or just curious about "what all that Baja stuff is about anyway", Shoemaker's "98 Baja 1000" won't dissapoint. Quality camera work, intelligent commentary from the men who make the sport happen, and the wild and wolly world of racing in the Mexican Peninsula all wrapped up in a VHS package. What more can a guy ask?
