General Overview

Math was something that very few of us gearheads ever spent a lot of time on in school. Add - subtract - multiply - divide, mabye a few fractions, but algebra? Geometery? Trig?......"Nahhhhh....I'll never use that stuff...."

......Until late one night in the garage, you realize that perhaps, no, that you SHOULD have paid a lot more attention to the teacher, and less attention to Becky Whasshername who sat across from you in that short black.....nevermind....The point is that working on, around, and with off-road vehicles does take some math knowledge. Wether it's calculating shock angle, or cubic inches, a little math will go a long way. Unless of course, you don't know what math to use.

Fortunately for those of us whose schoolastic attentions were elswhere, John Lawlor has created "The Auto Math Handbook". Lawlor, a former Magazine editor with Road & Track, and an avid off-road promoter / enthusiast, takes the mystery out of the formulas & equations that are an intregal part of the automotive process.

While you will ocaisionally find bits & pieces of auto math in various automotive publications, this book puts them together in an easy to understand, easy to read format. Truth be told, The Auto Math Handbook is the place that many publications go as reference for a variety of thier tech articles...including us.

Highlights

Formulas include...

  • Determining Displacement / Bore & Stroke
  • Determining Compression Ratio
  • Determining carb CFM requirements
  • CC'ing heads
  • Determining Chamber volume
  • Calculating Horsepower & Torque
  • Weight displacement
  • Weight Transfer
  • Determining Center of Gravity
  • calculating G-force
  • Calculating MPH, RPM, Gearing & Tire Size

The Verdict - 4

No, you won't find some mega tuners "secret recipie" for engine & chassis set-up. You won't find "glamour" articles like bolting a BDS 8-71 blower onto a small block chevy. You will however learn the oh so essential "basics" that such articles evolve from.

While it's not light or casual reading, "The Auto Math Handbook" is both essential reading & an essential addition to the library of any...let me say that again..."ANY" motorsport enthusiast. Wether you own a truck, quad, snowmobile or dirt bike, the knowledge contained in TAMH will leave you with a greater understanding of, and how to get more performance from, your vehicle.

Becky Whasshername not included.......
