"Sledgehammer"
(including Awesome Canyon, and Jackhammer trails) Video Review

Rick Russell has been exploring the backroads of California and Mexico for twenty years. Over the last five years he has been publishing trails for others to follow with SideKick Off Road Maps. Rick says, "The video series works hand in hand with the maps to provide even more information about an area. The viewer can ride along with us before exploring the area on his own."

General Overview

Sledgehammers are brutal tools, capable of a tremendous amount of damage. "The Sledgehammer" OHV trail near Johnson Valley (CA) is capable of even more. Twisted fenders. crushed rocker panels, broken axles and more, are all a part of the Sledgehammer experience. Why would any sane person expose themselves and their vehicles to this kind of abuse? If you have to ask, you probably wouldn't understand.

Sledgehammer, and it's "little brother" the "Jackhammer", are among the ultimate challenges in the world of off-roading . Those with little experience in the fine art of rock crawling, and an improperly set up, or "stock" vehicle need not apply for admission to these "5" rated trails. For many, their thrills, challenges, and experiences will remain only a dream, but thanks to Rick Russell, that dream has just moved a little closer to reality. With the support of the Victor Valley 4 Wheelers (builders of the trails, and their maintaining club), Rick takes the viewer on an oddesey of vehicular punishment that will leave many jaws hanging agape. It's that kind of video.

From the beginning, It's clear that your not in for an ordinary trail ride. Within 5 minuets of the start, one vehicle abandons hope, in mortal fear of his rocker panels. The remaining vehicles, all well set up, continue on, but experience their share of damage. The pounding of the Sledgehammer begins to take it's toll.

Video Highlights

  • Throughout the video, Rick gives a basic rundown of vehicle specs for the rigs along on the runs, showing the viewer the kind of equipment necessary to take on such difficult terrain.

  • Rocks, rocks, and more rocks, with a few sand dunes for good measure.

  • Good camera angles, with a lot of 3 wheeling, and action shots

  • The benefits of low, low gearing for rock crawling

  • Rock crawling tips like wheel positioning, line determination, and specific strategies.

  • The gnashing sound of rending metal

  • On-Trail repair techniques for several commonly occurring problems. (on trails like Sledgehammer, there are MANY "commonly occurring" problems)

  • Learn the details of these trails, locations of various obstacles, and bypass / escape routes

  • Frank Currie's Jeep Wrangler. You've seen this beast in the magazines, now see how it really performs!

The Verdict - "4+"

Each of Rick's videos (including Sledgehammer) are designed to work hand and hand with the his Sidekick maps, and he references them throughout the series. By pointing out various locations, points of interest, and other details on the map, Rick presents the viewer with a large variety of useful information that adds to the videos effectiveness as both entertainment, and education.

If you are a fan of rock crawling, a veteran of these trails, planning a first time trip, or just someone looking to see what all the fuss is about, this video is a must have. Aside from minor gripes (specifically the "Deliverance" inspired background music) I found the Video to be great guide to Sledgehammer, Awesome Canyon, and the Jackhammer trail. If you are looking to add to your video collection, this is money well spent.
